The end of What if…? has finally arrived to bring many of the storylines we’ve accompanied so far to a close. After Ultron starts wreaking havoc through the multiverse, beloved narrator, The Watcher has no choice but to break his code and interfere.
To fight against the threat, he recruits Dark Dr. Strange, Captain Carter, Star-Lord T’Challa, Party Thor, Killmonger, the Black widow from the last episode, and a version of Gamora who’s known as the slayer of Thanos. Together they form the Guardians of the Multiverse.
In the beginning, the interactions of the group come out a little bit awkward. As the group enjoys a quiet gathering before heading to battle funny moments ensue, but the changes of tone in the narrative are not as well placed as in other episodes.
However, it is still lots of fun. It is very engaging to see these alternate versions of characters interacting with one another in unprecedented ways in the MCU. But regarding dynamics, the trophy goes to Peggy Carter and Natasha Romanoff.
In Captain Carter’s universe, she and Natasha are BFFs. And guess what? They have a lot of chemistry together. This was definitely a friendship I didn’t know I needed until I saw it and would very much like to see more of them.
Though the episode showcases another version of Black Widow, it still shows that even if one of them doesn’t know the other, they are still a great team.
An epic showdown
Throughout the first season, we’ve seen some pretty amazing fights, but this episode takes things even further in terms of grandiosity. The conflict takes place in the destroyed Earth of the last episode, where Black Widow is the last survivor.
Ultron is at his full force, and it takes all of its characters’ strengths combined to do some damage. The fight is full of twists. When you think things are going in one direction, they go to the other, keeping things exciting.
The visuals are prettier than ever and the colors catch your eye. Moreover, the plot is tightly knit. Plot points and actions of the previous episode don’t go to waste. Actually, they make the whole difference to lead to the epic conclusion we were all waiting for.
Though many of the subjects throughout the series were tackled, there are still unanswered questions. First of all, how did events play out in the reality where Gamora killed Thanos? Will we see any of that?
Moreover, The Watcher made such a big deal of not interfering, but it is never explained why he couldn’t. Is there someone else more powerful than him that prohibits? Can it shatter the fabric of reality somehow? What will be the consequences of his actions?
And lastly, as it is usual with this series there is a cliffhanger in the end. That, alongside confirmation of season 2 states that in fact, there are more stories to be told.
So, what would you like to see in season 2? Let us know in the comments.
