What if… proves once again why its premise it’s not just a good, but a great idea. Throughout the last episodes, famous movie genres have been explored, including heist and murder mystery. This week we dive into one of the most famous subgenres of horror: zombies. It’s the zombie apocalypse the Marvel way!
The latest episode: What If… Zombies?! explores an idea that if mentioned without context could be considered preposterous. But with its spot-on execution, the series shows that Marvel characters and zombies can mix to tell a thoroughly entertaining and emotional story.
An unlikely roster of characters
In this reality, when Hank Pym tries to rescue his long-lost wife Janet van Dyne, with the help of their daughter, Hope, from the Quantum Realm they find out a virus has infected her. This virus manages to escape the realm and infect several people around the world, including The Avengers, who are transformed into zombies.
As Hulk returns to New York City to warn people about Thanos, he encounters a destroyed setting. The few heroes who managed to escape infection joined up to form the resistance and search for a cure to the virus. Among them are Peter Parker, Happy Hogan, Kurt, Bucky Barnes, Sharon Carter, Okoye, and Hope Van Dyne.
A first look into the featured characters and we already notice that many of them haven’t met or talked in the MCU before. Therefore, it is incredibly exciting to watch the interactions and imagine how the movies can incorporate these dynamics in the future.
The contrast between the attitudes and worldviews of Hope and Peter is a highlight among the dialogues. There’s a scene in the middle of the episode where the reason behind Peter’s optimism is explored. He lost so much already and keeping the hope is all he can do. That is enough to make Hope smile and urge him to remain optimistic.
The funniest episode yet
The humor is insane. This roster of characters includes some of the funniest Marvel characters and even the serious ones can deliver puns that are totally in character. I burst out laughing at one of Okoye’s jokes. Its delivery was so unexpected and such a perfect response to Peter’s previous pun. An example of great writing!
Despite the intense humor, the fifth episode of the series doesn’t shy away from drama and heavy implications. Sometimes you will laugh, and other times you’ll be thinking about the turn of events and the character’s choices deeply. And this mix is exactly where the charm of the story lies.
The episode’s 30 minutes fly by so rapidly it ends when you least expect it. As we reach the final minutes, we see an open-ending, much like in all other previous installments. But this time, things call out even more for a continuation. If any episode has the potential to turn into a spin-off, it is this one. Who knows what happens next?
